Aston Villa have lost four of six Premier League games after a horrible collapse away at Unai Emery’s Arsenal at the Emirates.
Aston Villa striker Wesley has admitted to the club’s official website that Dean Smith was left furious after a dramatic late collapse handed three points to ten-man Arsenal in a topsy-turvy Premier League clash on Sunday.
With just ten minutes of normal time remaining at the Emirates, Aston Villa were 2-1 up against a Gunners side who had Ainsley Maitland-Niles sent off.
But, by the time the full time whistle blew, Smith’s side found themselves stuck in the relegation zone after a fourth defeat in six games since promotion. Two goals in the blinking of an eye from Calum Chambers and the unstoppable Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang consigned Villa to a defeat that looked so unlikely just moments earlier.
So no wonder Smith was left frustrated after a glorious opportunity to claim a famous win passed Villa by.
“I think the results are coming. We showed good signs today for 60 minutes, but then conceded the two goals,” said Wesley, who scored his second Premier League goal on the hour.
“The manager was angry and agreed we can’t lose like this – especially with 10 men.
“I’m very happy to score but I’d be happier if we won the game. I have to continue to work hard.”
Aston Villa may be 18th after a handful of games but it’s difficult to argue that they deserve to be stuck near the bottom. Another collapse in North London, weeks after a late Harry Kane double saw them lose 3-1 at Tottenham, is a reminder of the ruthless nature of life in the top flight.
The quality is clear there but an inexperienced Aston Villa side need to show a smart, streetwise streak if they are to turn performances into points.
