Jak Alnwick has been forced to wait patiently for opportunities at Rangers since moving from Port Vale in January.
Jak Alnwick made only his third competitive appearance for Rangers in eight months on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old started between the sticks against Partick Thistle in the Betfred Cup quarter-finals and it’s fair to say he proved his worth to manager Pedro Caixinha.
Alnwick, who arrived from Port Vale in the January transfer window, ensured a nervy 3-1 win was not even more fraught with a virtuoso performance between the sticks, pulling off a brilliant reflex save from Connor Salmon with the scores level at 0-0 in the first-half.
However, with the Scottish Sun reporting that Rangers’ established number one Wes Foderingham has inked a new one-year contract extension to commit his future to the club until 2020, Alnwick’s task has not got any easier.
Foderingham may have conceded eight goals from just 11 shots on target in the league this season but he remains Caixinha’s go-to guy between the sticks and that seems unlikely to change any time soon regardless of how impressive Alnwick was in midweek.
The former Newcastle United youngster arrived at Ibrox as a back-up option and, as it stands, it looks likely to stay that way.
Whether it should, or not, is another matter. Foderingham has put in a number of inspirational displays since moving to Rangers in 2015 but only really won over the majority of fans midway through last season.
However, despite interest from former manager Mark Warburton at his new club, Nottingham Forest (Scottish Sun), Foderingham is sticking around for the long-term and you wonder when, or if, Alnwick will ever get a run in the side.
