Glasgow Rangers stopper Jak Alnwick is performing superbly during his time away from Ibrox.

Cedric Kipre of Motherwell has his shot saved well by Jak Alnwick of Rangers during the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Of the 15 players that Rangers currently have out on loan, Jak Alnwick is arguably the one who is making the most of his time away from Ibrox, having become a key player for Scunthorpe.

Alnwick spent the majority of last season as the Gers’ cup goalkeeper and his chances of game-time this term looked incredibly slim as Allan McGregor was brought in and quickly established himself as first-choice.

The loan move to Scunny appeared to make a lot of sense, and Alnwick – forgive the pun – is taking the opportunity with both hands. The League One side are yet to lose with Alnwick between the sticks, and he has kept clean sheets in his last two of his last three appearances.

In fact, there may well be some Rangers supporters who may be expecting Steven Gerrard to use him as McGregor’s understudy upon his return in the summer should his current form continue.

Wes Foderingham of Rangers walks away from a flare during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on September 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The current number two Wes Foderingham is arguably better than most of the first-choice keepers in the Scottish Premiership, but he is having to rely on domestic cup games for opportunities. And with Rangers needing just two wins to reach the Scottish League Cup semi-final, Foderingham has had little to do so far this term.

The Englishman may be fearful that he may be in danger of losing his place in the pecking order through little fault of his own. And with Alnwick only 25 and McGregor showing no signs of slowing down, that could prove to be an incredibly frustrating situation for him, especially after spending three years as number one.

With opportunities limited therefore, Foderingham surely has to make the most of any chance that he gets. And given how Gerrard is using him, you would imagine that helping Rangers end their wait for a domestic cup trophy – in either the League Cup or Scottish Cup next year – may be crucial for Foderingham’s prospects of ensuring that Alnwick’s brilliant form does not knock him further down the pecking order.
