Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has endured a frustrating campaign at Ibrox.
Wes Foderingham has told Sky Sports that he plans to speak to Steven Gerrard about his Rangers future in the summer as he does not want to remain a backup goalkeeper at Ibrox.
Foderingham has endured an unusual campaign. He spent the previous three seasons as the undisputed number one, but has been relegated to being Allan McGregor’s understudy since the Scot returned to Ibrox in the summer.
And the 28-year-old has admitted that he may need to look for a move away from Rangers at the end of the season and is planning to hold talks with Gerrard about his future role.
“That’s always in your thoughts,” he told Sky Sports, when asked whether he may need to leave. “I see myself as a No 1 goalkeeper. Sitting on the bench isn’t something that I want to do long term.
“The manager’s aware of that so there will be talks at the end of the season. We’ll see what we can do.”
The Englishman now has a fantastic chance to prove a point to his manager, with Allan McGregor suspended for Sunday’s Old Firm game after his red card against Hibernian.
Gerrard was clearly annoyed at the goalkeeper for lashing out, so perhaps there is an opportunity for Foderingham to stake a real claim ahead of next season.
McGregor’s form throughout the campaign suggests that he could continue for a while yet. So this may feel like a make or break chance for Foderingham. If he cannot make a big impression, then he may be even more determined to leave as the alternative is likely to be another year of sitting on the bench.
