Potential World Cup winner Luka Modric left Tottenham Hotspur for £30 million in 2012.
By Sunday evening, former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric might have added a World Cup title to his extensive list of individual honours.
Modric, who has won the Champions League on four occasions with Real Madrid since joining from Tottenham in 2012, produced another outstanding performance for Croatia on Wednesday as the 32-year-old helped to secure a 2-1 win over England after extra time.
Whatever happens against France in Moscow, this is a player who is easily one of the very best of his generation, but this is also a player who Spurs sold for a measly £30 million.
Considering Modric’s brilliance and what he has gone on to achieve, and could yet achieve, one wonders whether if chairman Daniel Levy was majorly short-changed in that deal.
At the time of his sale, the former Dinamo Zagreb product had another four years left on his contract in North London, meaning that Levy and the Lilywhites were not exactly in a position of weakness.
And yet Tottenham received only £30 million [BBC Sport] for him, which was significantly more in 2012 than it would be now, but it’s still the same amount that was paid to sign Erik Lamela a year later [The Guardian].
In today’s market, a 26-year-old Modric is comfortably worth a nine-figure transfer fee and although Levy is known for getting plenty of value in his transfers, this might be one where Spurs were robbed.
