Sky Sports have now updated with more details about Liverpool’s move for Ben Davies.
Liverpool are set to snap up the Preston North End defender later today, and the deal actually hasn’t set them back huge money.
The Reds have had to pay £500,000 up-front to sign Davies, with the rest of the money being contributed with add-ons.
Sky also claim that Liverpool will beat as many as four other teams to sign the 25-year-old.
It was known that Celtic and Bournemouth were interested in the centre-back, but the latest report adds that Burnley and Sheffield United were also keen on him.
“We can tell you a little bit about the deal to sign Davies,” Vinny O’Connor, of Sky said.
“We’re told a total of £500,000 up front. Structured add-ons as well worth up to £1.1m. That’s based on success with the club, appearances, even an England appearance clause as well and a 20 per cent sell-on on profit clause in the deal.
“Personal terms are also being sorted today as well. There are no problems anticipated there.
“Of course, we know that Celtic were convinced they had him on a pre-contract and they were understood to be ready to go in with an offer, cash up front, to get him today, but Liverpool nipped in ahead of them. Also, we understand there was interest from Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Burnley, but it is Liverpool who look to have got Davies now.”
Davies is making a huge step up by moving to Liverpool, but could still have an important role to play this season.
The Reds are very short of options at the back, with Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk all out injured.
And Davies should, therefore, receive plenty of game time between now and the end of the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
