Cork City fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was announced that Jake O’Brien had left to join Crystal Palace on a permanent basis.
What’s the story?
Well, the 20-year-old has spent time on loan at Selhurst Park, and is now joining the Eagles on a permanent deal following some impressive displays.
O’Brien has made 12 appearances for Crystal Palace’s Under-23 side, scoring four goals, following ten outings for Cork City’s first-team.
The centre-back’s efforts for Crystal Palace last season saw the club’s Under-23 side promoted to the Premier League 2 first division.
O’Brien started at centre-back as the Eagles defeated Sunderland on penalties in the play-off final at Selhurst Park.
Great move for Crystal Palace

By the looks of it, this is a great deal for Patrick Vieira.
Crystal Palace were afforded the chance to look at O’Brien before buying him, and after some brilliant performances, he’s now theirs.
It’s a clever way to make a decision on youngsters.
Especially those coming from Ireland, which is a tough area to find players with potential to play in the Premier League.

In O’Brien, however, it looks like Dougie Freedman has found one.
The youngster is a colossus of real physical strength, while he also seems to have that knack of scoring goals.
The Eagles could have a gem on their hands.
For now, let’s see what the Cork City fans on Twitter have been saying after seeing their defensive prospect leave for south London…
