It really does look as if Romelu Lukaku’s time as an Everton player has come to an end, with the striker admitting that staying at the club “is not really an option”.

Lukaku was asked about his future while on international duty with Belgium and did not leave much to the imagination in terms of whether he will remain with the Toffees.

“Staying at Everton is not really an option for next season,” the 24-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph.

“There is nothing concrete with another club at the moment, my agent is busy discussing things. I’m not going to make big declarations about my future, but I know where I want to play: in a club who are competing in the Champions League and can win titles in England.

“I don’t want to stay at the same level. I want to improve, and I know where I want to do that.

“My agent is now talking to a club. I know where I want to go, so I’ll just stay patient. I know meetings have been arranged, so I’m just waiting for a call. We are now in discussions with the club. We’ll see what happens.”

The Metro reports that Chelsea and Manchester United are now fighting it out to sign Lukaku in what is predicted to be an £100m transfer.

Yet does the Belgian coming out publicly like this before anything has been announced grate on the Goodison Park faithful, or leave them knowing exactly where they stand?

Having been outcasted by the Blues, Lukaku was given another chance in the Premier League by the Merseyside club when they signed him in a club record £28m deal in 2014. Since that time the Belgium international has rebuilt his reputation as a top-class forward.

Is telling that same club he does not want to be at their level anymore disrespectful? And even if he believed it, should he have kept it to himself?

Or is it refreshingly honest? After all, there have been many cases in the past where footballers pledge their loyalty to a team, only to leave shortly afterwards. Is Lukaku just saving the supporters from that nonsense?

There are two sides to every story and this is a story that could go on for a whole lot longer before it reaches its conclusion.
