Premier League legend Alan Shearer says he is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder James Maddison.

James Maddison joined Tottenham from Leicester City in the summer transfer window and has made a strong start in north London.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, Shearer said: “We’re all fans of him, aren’t we? We all like what and who he is. We like his attitude. Yeah, he’s had a really good start.”

Maddison scored his second goal in a Tottenham shirt last time out as Ange Postecoglou’s men went on to beat Burnley 5-2.

In total, the 26-year-old has registered four goal contributions in as many Premier League games.

Other teams should have tried to sign James Maddison

In the end, it feels like Tottenham got a free run at Maddison. Newcastle United were really interested in the Englishman back in the summer of 2022, with The Guardian reporting at the time that the Magpies had a £50m bid for him rejected by Leicester.

A year later, however, they did not seem as keen on him for whatever reason.

Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea probably could have done with Maddison after selling two of their attacking midfielders Mason Mount and Kai Havertz. The Blues, though, were never really in the picture for the England international and eventually signed Cole Palmer.

Their loss is Tottenham’s gain and Postecoglou will surely be delighted to have Maddison, who has been described as a “brilliant player” by his former manager Brendan Rodgers, in his ranks.

Spurs have impressed in the Premier League under their new boss so far, currently sitting second in the table, and Maddison is a big reason why.
