Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has shared the Tottenham squad’s view on Jose Mourinho reverting back to a more conservative style of play.
It wasn’t too long ago that this Spurs team were playing free-flowing attacking football with the likes of Gareth Bale, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane running rampant.
However, in the space of a week, Spurs’ season has capitulated somewhat with two losses to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb, and those have come after Mourinho reverted back to a more defensive style.
“Ahead of the Arsenal match last weekend he switched tactics again. He was playing four forwards, pressing high and scoring goals and getting results,” Castles said.
“I think personally he made a mistake by changing for the Arsenal game to a strategy that worked against Arsenal earlier in the season and playing cautiously and ending up losing a match where they were a goal up, albeit with a bad refereeing decision.
“I know that went down badly in the camp that the strategy had been changed after training and success in the more aggressive way of playing.”
It seems as though Mourinho has got this one wildly wrong.
Not only has his change in tactics rubbed his side up the wrong way, it’s not worked.
Of course, it’s impossible to say whether or not their last two games would have gone differently if they’d played more aggressively, but one thing is for sure, Mourinho’s tactics for those games didn’t work.
Hopefully, the manager can get his squad back on side before this slide gets any more severe.
