Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger stated that he wants Jack Wilshere to spend his entire career at the club, despite loaning him out to Bournemouth for the season, labelling him as ‘world-class’, as reported by Sky Sports.

Wilshere, 24, has struggled to string together a run of consistent games over the last few seasons at the Emirates, and his place in the England squad has come under threat, with Three Lions boss Sam Allardyce insisting that Wilshere must play more regularly to be considered for a national team spot (ESPN).

Wenger told reporters that Wilshere has a big part to play in Arsenal’s future, however, as quoted by Sky Sports:

“I hope personally that Wilshere stays his whole career here. Jack is a world-class player. He doesn’t have to show me he has the quality to play at Bournemouth, he just needs to be back at a competitive level.”

Arsenal have arguably the strongest central midfield in the Premier League with Aaaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin all competing for two spots, so it is little wonder that Wenger felt comfortable in losing Wilshere for a season.

Wenger highlighted the level of competition in midfield as a key reason why the 24-year-old was allowed to join Bournemouth:

“We had a chat together and he himself was concerned that he would not get enough competition early enough. He feels ready to play, and I couldn’t guarantee that. We thought it was a decision that looked logical to give him time to come back to a competitive level. At some stage you need competition.”

Arsenal take on Southampton tomorrow at the Emirates in a 3pm kick-off.
