Ahead of the much-awaited World Cup quarter-final between England and France, Arsene Wenger has compared Harry Kane to Karim Benzema.

In fact, this comparison remains relatively common between both fans and pundits alike.

Since the 2020/2021 season, the Tottenham striker has showcased a different side of his game, dropping deep and running the show.

To the extent where the 29-year-old took home both the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker of the Season Award.

The £200,000-a-week goalscorer has continued to operate in what is a false nine role in some sense, with many claiming he is one of the best passers in the league.

However, much of Karim Benzema’s career has involved him working as a facilitator for others to shine; namely Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

Perhaps this was a key reason why the Frenchman never truly got his due credit, until the departure of Ronaldo, where he hit unseen heights.

While many have chimed in on said parallel, not everyone possesses the incredible football mind that Wenger does, who has now had his say.

Arsene Wenger has explained how Harry Kane and Karim Benzema are similar ahead of the World Cup quarter-final between England and France.

“Kane is a bit like Benzema, a kind of forward-No.10. The speed at which he analyses, his perception of the game and of space is remarkable.”

The comparison is spot on

Unsurprisingly, tons of supporters are expected to scoff at the comparison made by Arsene Wenger, honing in on the recycled argument that Kane has never won any major silverware.

On the other hand, Karim Benzema and winning trophies go hand-in-hand.

However, this would be an extremely reductive way of assessing a comparison between two brilliant strikers, that are capable of running the show in deeper areas.

Arsene Wenger has got this one spot on.
