Tottenham Hotspur are now in pole position to secure Champions League football at the end of the season after scoring a late winner against Brighton.
But could Ange Postecoglou lead his Spurs side to a lot more?
Tottenham are sitting fourth in the Premier League table, six points ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United, whilst they are seven points behind leaders, Liverpool.
Presenter and former footballer Matt Holland seemingly dismissed the London club’s chances of winning the title, but Tim Sherwood was quick to respond to that.
He thinks his former side can still do it and that they are ‘right in there’ in the title race, as he told Premier League Productions (12/02/24 at 5:55 pm).
It also needs to be noted that, if Manchester City in second win their game in hand, then the gap between Spurs and the current champions would be nine points.
That’s surely too much for, not just Tottenham, but even the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal if they fell behind by that many points.
But not for Tim Sherwood because he thinks Ange Postecoglou’s men are still in the race.
Tottenham’s Premier League title chances
“I talked about worrying about Man United, they are never ever catching Tottenham’s goal difference,” said Sherwood. “I can tell you that now.
“The Tottenham fans would argue straightaway that, in the last three or four years, we have had Conte, Mourinho and Nuno. They were playing 8-10 men behind the ball, all the time, from the outset and got them nowhere. A bit like David Moyes as we saw. Very boring football.
“Certainly the offensive players in this team, they want to play like this and the fans want to watch it. Continue doing what you are doing. You took them to 4th position. You are favourites, in my opinion, to finish in the Champions League positions. Keep doing what you are doing.”
Presenter and ex-footballer Matt Holland responded: “They won’t be winning it this year.”
Sherwood added “Winning the league? They might win the league.” To which Holland asked with surprise: “Are they going to win the league?”
“Well, they could do. They are right in there,” responded Sherwood confidently.
Tottenham after Harry Kane
If Spurs can secure Champions League football after losing Harry Kane in the summer, then it would be some season from the club.
Not only did they lose such an important player and their all-time leading goalscorer, but he left days before the new season started.
Yet, fast forward to the present, and Postecoglou has Spurs playing like Kane never left because they have been outstanding.
The style of play has lifted the crowd like never before, and even if they are disappointed with their cup defeats, there is still belief that Postecoglou will take them a long way.
