Serie A outfit Bologna have set their sights on signing Erik Lamela from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window, sporting director Walter Sabatina told Il Resto, via Tuttomercatoweb.
Speaking to the Standard in January, Jose Mourinho said exactly what every Spurs fan was thinking about this most divisive of players.
“A good Erik Lamela, I love,” Mourinho said.
The problem is, a fit and firing Lamela is not exactly a regular sight.
The former Roma ace has been the very definition of inconsistent since arriving in North London in a £30 million deal eight years ago.
In fact, the recent derby defeat to Arsenal summed up Lamela’s Tottenham career in a neat little package – a glorious rabona goal followed by a stupid, needless red card.
With his £80,000-a-week contract due to expire in the summer of 2022, it will be interesting to see how Tottenham react when Bologna offer the Argentine international a return to Italy.
“Lamela is one of the names we are looking into,” said Sabatini, who is preparing for life without the much-admired Riccardo Orsolini.
“Let me explain: we are trying to understand if there are possibilities to get him. Certainly, should Orsolini leave, there would be no better substitute. We’ll see.”
In truth, Lamela has been one of the most impressive performers in a Tottenham shirt since the turn of the year; a flurry of energy, speed and skill in a Spurs side who have laboured through games during an underwhelming run of form.
