Emile Smith Rowe has hinted that he is open to playing in any position for Arsenal next season as the 21-year-old prepares for an important campaign with the north London side.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, the Hale End academy graduate revealed that he is willing to operating in any position that Mikel Arteta sees fit for the England international following a breakout year for Smith Rowe where the Arsenal star developed into one of the club’s most important players.
The youngster bagged double digits in Premier League goals and proved to be an incredible super sub as Arsenal just missed on a top-four spot, yet Smith Rowe’s position in the squad has not been truly defined, with the attacking midfielder mainly playing out on the left but also through the centre and as the main man upfront.
With the arrival of Gabriel Jesus, Smith Rowe could see his chances limited in the starting XI based on the Brazilian’s connection with Gabriel Martinelli, who is expected to retain the left-wing spot on the opening day of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace.
Indeed, Smith Rowe’s versatility has made him a fan favourite with Arsenal supporters, and when asked about his ideal position, the England talent revealed that he is comfortable playing anywhere as long as he is given a chance on the pitch to impress the crowd.
Smith Rowe said when asked about his ideal position when selected to play for the Arsenal senior team: “As a young player, you don’t really care where you play, you just want to be playing. I am open to anything, we will see what happens.”
