Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to respond to a stunning statistic involving Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.
As revealed by the BBC, Southampton’s No.8 has the best conversion rate of any Premier League player to have attempted more than 50 direct freekicks since the start of the 2003-04 campaign with 12.5%.
When discovering this, Lineker wrote: ‘That’s a very impressive stat. Well played @Prowsey16.’
We may only be seven games into the Premier League season, but Southampton and Ward-Prowse are enjoying an excellent run of form right now.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men jumped up to fifth following their 4-3 win over Aston Villa – the Saints are just three points off first-place Liverpool.

In that victory, the aforementioned dead-ball specialist scored two freekicks and got an assist after delivering a set-piece onto Jannik Vestergaard’s head.
Ward-Prowse now has three goals and an assist in seven Premier League appearances this season, as the Saints have won four and drawn one of their first seven outings.

After a slow start, including an opening day loss to Crystal Palace, Hasenhuttl’s men look in great shape as things stand, with the likes of Danny Ings and Vestergaard delivering on a regular basis.
It helps when you have one of the Premier League’s best ever freekick takers in your ranks, as Ward-Prowse is proving to be.
