Liverpool will not be facing Bayern Munich in the battle to sign Kylian Mbappe with CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitting that the Paris Saint-Germain superstar is out of his reach, speaking to Le Figaro.
When it comes to the prospect of the World Cup winner swapping Paris for Anfield, the phrase ‘never say never’ comes to mind.
There has been enough behind-the-scenes rumblings over the last two years to suggest that Mbappe to Liverpool is a genuine possibility.
And for all the doubters out there, who really thought Cristiano Ronaldo would end up at Juventus or that Neymar would turn his back on Barcelona?
And, with the former Monaco talisman yet to extend a contract which expires in 2022, there is a very real chance that PSG – a club hit hard economically by both the pandemic and the collapse of Ligue 1’s billion-dollar TV deal – may be forced to cash in next year.
Le Parisien reported in November that Liverpool are one of two clubs who have a realistic chance of luring Mbappe away from the Champions League runners-up.
Given that Mbappe and Zinedine Zidane never seem to shut up about each other, it’s no surprise that the other potential destination is Real Madrid.
Now, another European powerhouse has shown their hand.

“I love Mbappe and his way of playing, but we will never be able to bring him to Bayern,” Rummenigge explains.
“Anyway, he is where he is. Nasser (Al-Khelaifi, the PSG president) is a good friend of mine. I will not bother him on this subject.”
Bayern are not a club who tend to break the bank on individual players with Lucas Hernandez, the £72 million record-signing, the only man they have ever bought for a fee in excess of £50 million.
