Matt Doherty has backed Conor Coady’s season-long loan move from Wolves to Everton by posting ‘well done’ on the centre-back’s Instagram.

On Monday night, former Liverpool player Coady became Frank Lampard’s fifth signing of the summer – Jamie Carragher labelled his ex-teammate a ‘turncoat’ when the deal was confirmed.

This is a big signing for the Toffees because last season was a massive warning that they need to head into the new campaign with added quality, experience and leadership to their squad.

Well, Coady provides that in bucket loads and he will, more than likely, partner fellow summer signing, James Tarkowski, at the back – the club’s director of football labelled him a ‘top-quality’ player.

Everton lost their opening game of the new Premier League season when Chelsea recorded a 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday, with a trip to Villa Park awaiting them at the weekend.

The former Wolves captain should start in the Midlands, as his England teammate, Kieran Trippier, wished him ‘good luck’ in the comments section of his IG post.

ENGLISH FOOTBALL’S MOST PLAYED FIXTURE

Fans hear it, season in and season out, but Aston Villa vs Everton is football’s most played fixture in English football history, with both teams suffering of late.

Whilst the Toffees understand their problems. And the Goodison Park faithful are behind Lampard, and him trying to push them up the table, the same can’t be said for a certain Steven Gerrard.

Villa lost their opening game of the new Premier League season to newly-promoted Bournemouth, and result aside, the defeat was well and truly abject.

All of this stems from last season, as a defeat for Gerrard on Saturday might just see the fans turn on him, and he’s not helped by the fact that there is a buzz in the Everton camp now with their new signings.
