Well, unfortunately for Hartlepool, the broadcasters have decided against showing their trip to Selhurst Park in the FA Cup fourth round on TV.
Had the League Two side’s clash with the Eagles been selected, they would’ve received a welcome windfall of cash, which would’ve been brilliant for them after the financial impacts of COVID-19.
Out of the kindness of their heart, Crystal Palace have consequently offered to subsidise coach travel for the Hartlepool supporters travelling to SE25.
After hearing the news, Stelling – a fan of Hartlepool – said the following live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.
“There is no TV bonus for my lot, because the TV companies would rather show regulation Premier League sides playing against each other. However Crystal Palace have decided to subsidise all of Hartlepool’s travel. Well done Crystal Palace.”
Hartlepool’s Chief Operating Officer Stephen Hobin said the gesture has restored his faith in the footballing family in a club statement.
There is plenty of greed in modern football, so it’s refreshing to see a Premier League club help out a side lower down the football ladder.
More clubs should copy Crystal Palace
In truth, how difficult is it for every Premier League club to subsidise travel arrangements for supporters of teams below them in the football ladder?
Manchester United welcome Middlesbrough to Old Trafford, while Liverpool will take on Cardiff at Anfield.
Even Championship clubs have been hit hard by the pandemic, so it would be nice if the Red Devils and the Reds followed Crystal Palace’s lead and offered to help out.
At a time where many football clubs are dying as a result of the pandemic, it’s time for those dining at England’s top table to throw some food down.
