Speaking on Soccer AM’s YouTube channel, Kalvin Phillips has shared what Andrea Pirlo text him before the Euro 2020 final.
Phillips has often been compared to the Italian legend throughout his career, receiving the nickname ‘the Yorkshire Pirlo’ for his exploits at Leeds.
However, just before Phillips lined up to play against Italy back in July, the real Pirlo got in touch with him.
What’s Phillips said?
Phillips shared what Pirlo text him before the game.
“Pirlo, he sent you a message before the final what did he say?” Tubes asked.
“He just said ‘Hi, good luck in the final, all the best’,” Phillips said.
“He did realise you were playing against Italy?” Tubes probed
“Yeah, that’s what I mean I thought he was going to say something else. It was definitely him. Weird, but I was buzzing with it though,” Phillips concluded.

The Yorkshire Pirlo
There’s a reason that Pirlo got in touch with the Leeds United midfielder in the summer, and that’s because he’s the Yorkshire Pirlo.
Much like the real Pirlo, Phillips starred at the Euros before falling short in the final. Pirlo was arguably the Player of the Tournament back in 2012 before Spain demolished Italy in the final, while Phillips was unbelievable for the Three Lions before crashing out on penalties.
Pirlo was a class act on the pitch and it seems as though he’s also a class act off of it with this message to Phillips in the summer.
