Manchester City attacking midfielder Jack Grealish has said on Sky Sports Premier League (10:07pm, January 5, 2023) that he did not expect his cross for Riyad Mahrez to get past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in London in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

Mahrez scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute.

Former Aston Villa playmaker Grealish provided the assist.

The England international attacking player gave a low cross from the left.

It went past Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa, and Mahrez slotted it home from close range.

Grealish has admitted that he did not think that his cross would reach Mahrez, saying that he expected the £150,000-a-week (Spotrac) Kepa to get to it.

The cross was actually quite close to the Chelsea goalkeeper, and perhaps he should have caught it.

The result has enhanced defending champions City’s chances of catching leaders Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

As for Chelsea, the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are now looking very unlikely to end up in the top four this season.

Grealish said: “Do you know? It was weird because I was speaking to Riyad, and he said to me that he thought that the keeper was going to get it at one point, and so did I.”

The City star added: “I thought that the keeper was going to get it at one point.”
