Stoke City and Leeds United are among the clubs said to be keen on the Portsmouth centre-back.
The Portsmouth defender, Matt Clarke, is reluctant to commit his future to the club amid reports of interest from higher division clubs such as Stoke City and Leeds United.
Like Leeds, Portsmouth suffered defeat in their division’s play-off semi-finals this week, ensuring another season of League One football.
And Pompey’s failure to gain promotion could have disastrous consequences as they attempt to keep the likes of Clarke, whose contract expires in 13 months’ time, at Fratton Park.
“I’m contracted until next year and that’s all I know,” the 22-year-old said when asked about his future by The Portsmouth News. “I can’t say what is going to happen. I guess you could say that for every member of the squad.
“Football’s a funny game and you never know what’s going to happen. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m going to be here or I’m not going to be here. Whatever happens, happens in many respects.
“Every player has aspirations to get to the top and play as high as they can. We don’t work as hard as we do and put in the hours to settle for something less.
“You want to play and perform at the next level. You’re always looking to progress.”
The Times listed Stoke and Leeds as Clarke suitors in March, and suggested he was valued by Portsmouth at £4 million.
Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Hull City and Reading are among the clubs also credited with interest in Pompey’s player of the year, while the Swansea City manager, Graham Potter – who has been strongly linked with the Brighton vacancy – was present for Sunderland’s visit to Fratton Park, according to The Portsmouth News.
