Dries Mertens could be a perfect fit for Tottenham.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Tottenham Hotspur’s strategy for signing wingers in the recent past has been clear, sign potential rather than established talent.
Clinton N’Jie, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, and even Erik Lamela are examples of this, and their rumoured pursuit of Wilfried Zaha suggests they are also targeting a player yet to reach his potential.
The problem is for Tottenham, none of these players have really hit the heights expected, with only Lamela coming close, but being desperately inconsistent, while Zaha appears incredibly overpriced with The Sun reporting earlier this month he could cost £30 million.
The answer is to move for a proven winger, one at the top of his game, and one who is in the form of his life, Dries Mertens.
Dries Mertens celebrates
Mertens has scored 19 goals this season for Napoli in Serie A, 24 in all competitions.
Having been at Napoli since 2013, Mertens is reportedly eyeing a move to the Premier League as his next challenge, Belgian outlet HLN report.
He would be ideal for Tottenham, but it would require a shift in strategy from Daniel Levy and co, given that Mertens is 29-years-old.
It would be an unusual type of signing for Spurs, but Mertens could be just what they need. He would join international teammates Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Dembele, and take little time to settle.
