Diogo Jota is emerging as a massive player for Liverpool.

The Portugal international scored twice on Thursday night as Liverpool beat Brendan Rodgers’s Leicester City side 2-0 at Anfield.

In doing so, Jurgen Klopp’s outfit moved back to within nine points of Manchester City, who have played one game more.

The 25-year-old now has 17 goals from 30 appearances across all competitions for the Reds this season, having already smashed his tally of 13 for the 2020-21 campaign.

Liverpool spent £45 million on signing Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers during the summer transfer window of 2020.

However, even the German manager has admitted via the club’s official website that Jota is exceding expectations on Merseyside.

He said after the Leicester win last night.

“We knew he is good, [but] we had no idea how good – or where – his limit is or where he can go and I am not sure he is already there, he is just improving.”

Exciting

That last part of the manager’s sentence will no doubt excite Liverpool supporters.

The idea of Jota getting even better is certainly cause for celebration and it’s genuinely realistic, too.

At 25, Jota is nowhere near the peak of his career yet and by the time he’s 29 – like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – there’s honestly no telling what sort of superstar he’s going to be.

The former Wolves attacker simply has so many strings to his bow, so many different ways in which to hurt the opposition and Klopp is right – even Liverpool fans probably didn’t expect this level of quality or consistency.
