Kevin Sharp has told i News that he welcomes Leeds United opening talks over a new contract for Kalvin Phillips, but admits they’re not actively encouraging the matter.
Phillips has caught the eye this summer after cutting an integral role in Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2020. His performances have sparked attentive glares to arise from some of the Whites’ Premier League rivals, and from further afar.
Spanish publication Defensa Central have claimed Real Madrid are weighing up a €30m (£25m) swoop for the 25-year-old. While Leeds Live suggest interest has been mentioned from Liverpool and Manchester United after his strong first season in the Premier League.

Phillips started 28 of his 29 Premier League appearances last term after playing a vital role in Leeds’ promotion. Those performances earnt the midfielder his England debut in September and has played all but 25 minutes at Euro 2020.
Sharp, the former Leeds defender who now represents Phillips, would have no issue if the Whites were to open talks over a new contract. But he admits they are not encouraging the matter or pushing for a pay rise to his current deal.
“It’s not something we’re banging on the door to make happen because it’s about Kalvin playing and enjoying his football,” Sharp said.
“But if Leeds want to improve that [his terms] and protect their assets, for sure we’d be interested in sitting down with them. His value will increase and long may that continue.”
Sharp may not be pushing, but Leeds are plotting new Phillips contract
While Sharp may not be pushing for it, Leeds are plotting a new contract for Phillips. The Telegraph reported in April that the Elland Road outfit wanted to reward him with a new deal that reflects his progress from a Championship sensation to England regular.
Phillips certainly deserves a new deal after penning his last terms in 2019 before embarking on a promotion-clinching season. And he is now, rightly, earning admires across Europe for his performances for both club and country.
Leeds also have no interest whatsoever in selling Phillips this summer, per The Athletic. And it is no wonder they are loath to lose the midfield when Phillips can control games with such ease. He also leads the Whites as a vocal presence on the pitch and no stage is too big.
Paul Merson admitted to Sky Sports that he was ‘shocked’ by Phillips’ performance for England against Croatia, as well. The Leeds product easily justified Southgate’s selection, injecting heaps of energy and urgency to the side in a box-to-box role.
