Roy Keane has stated that Chelsea goalkeeper and Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Edouard Mendy is a ‘weak link’ and someone who has lost form.
The outspoken TV pundit singled out Mendy for criticism at the Qatar World Cup, with Senegal getting knocked out by England during the last-16 stage.
In truth, the champions of Africa did pretty well to reach the knockout stages, but up against the attacking might of England, it proved to be too much for them.
Not so long ago, Mendy was winning the Champions League in Chelsea colours, as well as helping his proud nation – via penalty shootouts – win the Africa Cup of Nations.
But since then, the 30-year-old’s form has fallen off a cliff, with many questioning his status at Stamford Bridge.
Well, Keane certainly thinks his form has gone north and that he’s ‘certainly not’ producing the performances he was over a year ago, as he told ITV SPORT.
“You mentioned their goalkeeper, Senegal’s,” said Keane. “I think he is a weak link for them. He’s not that great. And he’s certainly not (the form he was in a year ago).”
MENDY OFFERED TO TOTTENHAM
This could be taken with a pinch of salt, but with Spurs looking for a replacement for Hugo Lloris, there are suggestions that Chelsea’s £52k-a-week goalkeeper has been offered to their London rivals.
Both clubs, not just on the pitch, but also in the boardroom, don’t exactly see eye-to-eye, so it would be something if such a transfer takes place.
Whether it’s Mendy, or somebody else, Antonio Conte needs a new long-term keeper because Lloris’ old errors are starting to creep up again.
But those in north London have known for a while that they have needed to replace the 2018 World Cup winner, it just seems as though it will now happen sooner rather than later.
