Rafael Leao has hinted that positive talks have been held with AC Milan over signing a new contract, with Liverpool and Tottenham both interested in the Portuguese international.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 23-year-old winger revealed that a meeting took place with Milan sporting director Paolo Maldini over signing a new contract, with Leao indicating that the talk went well with the Italian legend.

Leao’s future has been a major talking point across the international media in recent weeks, with the Portuguese star being heavily linked with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham as reported by Corriere della Sera and CalcioMercato respectively.

WIth Chelsea and Manchester City also in the race for Leao, interest is at an all-time high for Leao, especially with the winger impressing in Qatar with Portugal, where the forward scored in a 3-2 win against Ghana to send Cristiano Ronaldo’s side on their way into the round of 16.

With Milan struggling to sign Leao down to a new contract, many expected the Rossoneri to have given up on their pursuit of tying the attacker down to a new deal. However, according to the player himself, things could not be more different than what has been reported.

Leao said about his contract situation: “I’m happy, proud, now I have to concentrate on the World Cup, then I will talk to Milan as soon as I arrive. Do I want to sign the contract? Even before arriving in the national team we had a meeting with Maldini, it was positive, so when I arrive in Milan we will talk.”
