Tottenham defender Clement Lenglet has hinted that he wants to sign for the north London club on a permanent deal at the end of his loan spell from FC Barcelona next summer.

In an interview with the Times, the France international revealed that there is no option in his loan deal with Tottenham to automatically sign for the Premier League club in 2023. However, Lenglet hinted that he could be open to a permanent switch from Barcelona depending on how the season goes.

Lenglet was a surprise summer addition from Antonio Conte as the defender signed on loan for the season, and the centre-back has had mixed success so far in England, with the 27-year-old making just seven appearances in all competitions, six of which, though, have been starts.

With Tottenham’s defence one of the best in England this season, Conte and Fabio Paratici could be tempted to sign Lenglet on a permanent deal next year should the centre-back continue to impress for Spurs. And according to the Frenchman himself, he would be keen to remain in north London.

Barcelona spent the good part of two years trying to ship off Lenglet due to the La Liga giants’ growing wage bill. Yet with the defender seemingly settled in England, there’s a good chance that Tottenham could land themselves a bargain next summer if the centre-back opts to remain in the Premier League.

Lenglet said when asked about if he would want to extend his stay in Tottenham beyond this season: “In the contract there isn’t an option [to buy] but we’re in October. We have to wait. I have to be good on the pitch and help the team. Maybe if everything is OK, we will speak.”

As mentioned, Barcelona have been looking to offload Lenglet for some time, and the defender’s form for Conte for the remainder of the season could result in Tottenham signing the defender for good in the summer of 2023, and at a bargain price.

Indeed, Lenglet would present himself as cheap option in the market. And with the defender also at the peak of his career, there’s a strong chance that the defender could become better at Tottenham in the years to come if the north London side pull the trigger.
