‘We will sign one or another player, absolutely sure’: Carlos Carvalhal says Sheffield Wednesday transfer plans already in place

The Sheffield Wednesday manager is keen to strengthen his squad next month.

Carlos Carvalhal has revealed that he expects Sheffield Wednesday to sign ‘one or another’ player in January.

Wednesday are currently without a win in six matches, and have fallen to 10 points off the play-off places in 15th position.

The run has only increased speculation that Carvalhal could soon be removed from his role at Hillsborough, but speaking to the club’s official Facebook page on Thursday the Portuguese said he is already eyeing up new recruits next month.

Asked if the Owls have plans to strengthen when the transfer window re-opens, Carvalhal replied: “We are working that, we are working that. It is something we are analysing, the crucial positions that we have and are missing players (from).

“If you asked me if nobody is injured, if we need a player in this moment I would say immediately no we don’t need. I understand sometimes the opinion of the critics, and they are correct about the pace.”

Carvalhal admitted to lying about his side’s lack of pace after being asked about it earlier in the campaign, claiming it was to protect his players.

“With (Fernando) Forestieri injured we need pace in attack, we need more speed in attack,” he conceded.

“Let’s see (what happens) in the beginning of January because we are looking to the market, we are looking to players, especially the players to loan. We have open eyes to that position and to one or another position.

“If we need more than one or another we will propose to the chairman to bring (them).

“In this moment if you ask me if I prefer more players or I prefer to recover our players, I prefer to recover our players. But we are looking to the market. Probably we will bring one or another player, absolutely sure, in January.”

Sheffield Wednesday had nine first team regulars missing for Friday’s 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but are boosted by the return of midfielder Sam Hutchinson against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The Owls will also hope to have Barry Bannan, Jack Hunt and Steven Fletcher available again, although Keiren Westwood, Tom Lees, Kieran Lee, George Boyd and Forestieri look set to remain sidelined for the time being.
