Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking about Liverpool’s right-back position, suggesting that Joe Gomez could potentially play there against Manchester City.

Klopp has a bit of a quandary at right-back this weekend with Trent Alexander-Arnold out of action, and he’s considering his options.

The German has previously turned towards James Milner in these situations, while Neco Williams is a natural fit in that role.

However, during this press conference, Klopp names Joe Gomez as a potential right-back option against City.

What’s been said?

Klopp gave his view on the right-back situation.

“We do a line-up and we have more options actually for the position, so we will see which one we choose. We have obviously James, we have Joe, we have Neco, we could change system – there are quite a few things. We have time to train this week, so there are a lot of things possible,” Klopp said.

Perfect for this game

Milner and Neco Williams may have more experience of playing at right-back, but for this game against Manchester City, Joe Gomez could be the best option.

Yes, he’s not as good going forward as Liverpool’s other options, but in some situations, you need to prioritise defending ahead of attacking.

Manchester City have so many good options down the left, be it Raheem Sterling or Jack Grealish and the Reds will need to have a full-back on the pitch capable of dealing with the dangers those players bring.

Gomez isn’t a natural right-back, spending most of his career as a central defender, but playing him in a different role could work against City.
