Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani has told The Times that the club plan to open talks with head coach Marcelo Bielsa over a new contract.
Bielsa has been in charge of Leeds since the summer of 2018, and at the end of last season, he got the Whites promoted back to the Premier League after 16 long years.
The Argentine has not signed long-term contracts at the Whites so far, and put pen to paper on only a one-year deal in September 2020, as reported by BBC Sport at the time.
This means that Bielsa will be out of contract at Leeds at the end of the season, and club chairman Radrizzani has said that his plan is to open talks with the Argentine and keep him at Elland Road.
Radrizzani told The Times about Bielsa: “Marcelo is a man of his word, he doesn’t need a contract and we decide year by year because obviously he’s far from home, he couldn’t decide to stay longer in the Championship and at the same time especially in a year with Covid we need to respect the circumstances and decide in the right time.
“It is our intention to continue with him and we will open a discussion with him when he’s ready to do so, but at the moment Marcelo is very focused on each game so I don’t know if he’s really caring about his own future as he’s so analytic and focused on his job. I am ready to talk when he is, we have a continuous relationship and there’s a lot of respect and understanding between us.”
Exciting for Leeds United fans
Bielsa is loved and adored by the Leeds fans and is already a legend at the club.
After all, it was under the Argentine that the Whites got promotion to the Premier League.
It is very unlikely that Leeds will get relegated at the end of the season, and it would make sense for the club to try to strike a deal with Bielsa.
