Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Pep Lijnders has confirmed that Divock Origi will not be playing in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City.

Liverpool are likely to rotate against Leicester. After all, the Carabao Cup is often seen as an opportunity to rest your best players. Especially during this festive period.

However, despite Origi always being a reliable rotation option, he’s not going to be able to play in this one as he continues to recover from an injury that he’s been suffering with for a few weeks now.

Indeed, Origi has been out of action since he scored the winner against AC Milan in the Champions League, and, sadly, he won’t be back for this one either.

What’s been said about Origi?

Lijnders had some bad news for Liverpool fans after he was asked for an update on Origi’s fitness.

“No, he’s still not training with the team. So he will not be back, he’s our top scorer in this, so we will miss him yeah,” Lijnders said.

Blow

This is a bit of a blow for Liverpool and for Origi.

As Lijnders says, Origi has been prolific in this competition over the years. He’s scored 11 goals in 15 League Cup appearances for Liverpool since his arrival at Anfield, and they could have done with him here.

It’s unlikely that Liverpool will risk their superstars in this match, but Origi’s absence may mean that they’re forced to field a youth player in the frontline.

We can only hope that Origi will be back for the semi-finals, should Liverpool manage to make it that far.
