Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has told the club’s official website that he will try to sign a central defender before the January transfer window closes next week.

Klopp has suggested that the injury to Joel Matip during Liverpool’s win against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Thursday evening has accelerated the Reds’ quest to bring in a new centre-back.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury absentees, and the situation is so dire that midfielder Jordan Henderson has been playing in central defence.

Fabinho, who is a defensive midfielder by trade, is now a regular in defence, with inexperienced players Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips also featuring from time to time.

Klopp told Liverpool’s official website about signing a centre-back: “I don’t know but we will try. It would be funny when you all think, ‘Ahh, Liverpool is just fine with the situation, they don’t care and they don’t try’.

“We try, but how you know, there’s nothing to say until something happens so we will see. The situation yesterday didn’t make it easier or whatever but it’s still just that we try to do the right things. If that’s possible we will do it, if not then not.”

Exciting news for Liverpool fans

Liverpool are very much in the running for the Premier League title this season, and no one should dismiss their chances of clinching the championship for the second year in a row.

The Reds do need cover in central defence, and now that Klopp seems very eager to bring in someone is exciting and promising for the fans.

The problem is that Liverpool may have left it too late to sign a quality centre-back.
