Liverpool collapsed in the final stages against Brendan Rodgers’ side
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been left scratching his head after Liverpool’s catastrophic final 12 minutes against Leicester.
The champions had looked set to rebound from the 4-1 defeat against Manchester City with a creditable victory at the King Power, thanks to Mo Salah’s superb goal on 67 minutes.
James Maddison’s controversial equaliser was followed three minutes later by an inexplicable mix-up between Alisson and new signing Ozan Kabak, which was capitalised on by Jamie Vardy.
Harvey Barnes sealed victory four minutes later, and Liverpool found themselves wondering how they had succumbed to a third successive Premier League defeat.
Alexander-Arnold was fulsome in his praise for the team’s performance, and aghast at the manner in which they imploded towards the end.
Speaking on the official Liverpool website, the £40,000-per-week man said: “I think for 70 to 75 minutes we were outstanding, up there with one of our best performances – counter-pressing, taking the ball off them for fun, they couldn’t really get out.
“Really, really top drawer from us.
“I think first half we never created too many clear-cut chances but second half we did, had a few more shots, scored, and we were in the driving seat.
“Then the tables turned and they put the game to bed within the matter of five to 10 minutes and that’s football.
“It happened so quickly, it just happened in a moment and we’ve just crumbled at the end of the day.”
The result leaves Liverpool 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City, having played one game more.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have a chance to set aside their domestic woes on Tuesday night when they face RB Leipzig in the Champions League at the Red Bull Arena, before hosting Everton in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
