Jose Enrique has claimed that Liverpool ‘should have’ renewed Sadio Mane’s contract, instead of selling him, after Paul Merson claimed that the deal was ‘one of the worst’ in recent times.

The former Liverpool left-back added on Instagram that if Jurgen Klopp’s side were winning this season, then ‘no-one’ would be talking about Bayern Munich’s new star.

Both Mane and Mo Salah were in the same boat when it came to contracts, Liverpool fans wanted both of them signed up for the long-term, but given how the club operates from the top, it didn’t seem possible.

In the end, after winning every trophy possible during his time at Anfield, Mane decided to open a new chapter of his career.

In a perhaps reluctant manner, they sold the Senegal star to the German champions in a deal which could rise to £35 million, according to Sky Sports.

Nonetheless, with Klopp searching for answers to his side’s current problems, this is what Enrique had to say about the Mane deal.

LIVERPOOL’S ISSUES ARE BIGGER THAN MANE

Every team would miss a player of Mane’s quality if he left them and, in this case, Liverpool are no different.

But their issues are bigger than just Mane heading for the exit door because if he was still here, then it wouldn’t improve Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending.

The England international is struggling, along with Virgil van Dijk, who is looking like the shadow of the player that was previously feared out on the pitch.

Then there is Salah’s drop in form, which stems back from last season when he returned from the AFCON’s alongside Mane.

Not forgetting the issues in the middle of the park, problems that stem back from last season, lack of depth and refreshment needed, so the next two transfer windows are going to be pretty big for the club.
