Frank Lampard has admitted that he ‘understands’ his Everton players will be in for a tough night under the lights against Leeds United at Elland Road, as he told the club’s official Twitter account.
The midweek fixtures are starting to kick in for Premier League clubs and Everton have the task of trying to earn their first win of the season on Tuesday night in Yorkshire.
Leeds were on the road over the weekend and they dropped points at Graham Potter’s Brighton, but Lampard could only watch his side muster a point at Brentford.
The last time Jesse Marsch’s side played at Elland Road, they put three goals past Chelsea and secured a deserved win against the Champions League club.
There is a different feel to Leeds this time around, despite the team losing such key players in the summer market, and the fans now have a spring in their step.
Lampard has been there before, mainly as a manager as Derby County fans will remember, and he spoke about playing under the lights at Elland Road.
“I understand it’s going to be a tough night,” said Lampard. “It’s a big atmosphere at Leeds. Every game is hard in the Premier League. We know that.
“You can see big signs that we are getting better – yes, it will be tough (embracing the Leeds crowd under the lights). A lot of them will be used to that, they have played these games before.
“Calm head. Match Leeds for energy and aggression. All the basics of the game. And be confident in ourselves. We have to go to Leeds to try and win the game.”
NO LOVE LOST BETWEEN LAMPARD AND LEEDS FANS
There is history between Lampard and Leeds fans, and it all stems back from their days in the Championship.
That spy-gate scandal, which involved Marcelo Bielsa, started it all off and brewed up quite a rivalry between Leeds and Derby.
When Lampard became manager of Chelsea, those in Yorkshire were sure to remember not to forget what unfolded in England’s second-tier.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that ‘stop crying Frank Lampard’ will be ringing around Elland Road on Tuesday night.
