Sam Allardyce told his post-match interview that Jose Mourinho wouldn’t ask his Tottenham players to ‘score three goals’ as he urged his West Brom team to shore up from a defensive standpoint.
Another game and another defeat for the Baggies at the weekend, as they suffered a 2-0 loss against Tottenham.
The luck certainly wasn’t with those in the Midlands because, only a few days ago, Tottenham were struggling without their main man Harry Kane upfront, but he returned to seal the points for his team on Sunday.
Allardyce shared his thoughts on his side’s defending and used Mourinho as an example.
“Put it this way, until the team stops conceding goals, we are finding it hugely difficult,” said Allardyce.
“Jose wouldn’t ask Tottenham to score three goals every game. And that’s what it is getting to. We have to stop that, first.
“That has to be a back four and a goalkeeper, first and foremost. But it has to be protected from the rest of the players.”
West Brom have the worst defence in the Premier League this season – 54 goals conceded, worse than bottom-of-the-table, Sheffield United, who have had a wretched time.
Allardyce will be hoping that his players can take something out of Tottenham’s defensive books, because whilst they have still had their problems, they still have the second-best defence in the division.
Current leaders Manchester City sit top of that pile with 14 goals conceded from their 22 matches, with Spurs on 22 from their 22 games.
