Hugo Lloris has admitted to Football London that Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking at Tottenham Hotspur is ‘sad situation.
Spurs fired the Portuguese manager on Monday after only four months in charge.
The 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United was the last straw for chairman Daniel Levy.
One day after Nuno went, Levy brought Antonio Conte to Tottenham in what has to be considered a massive upgrade, given that he’s won five top-flight league titles in two countries.
But Lloris has stressed that it didn’t please him or any of his teammates to see the former Wolves boss go, suggesting it’s part of football.
He said: “As I said before it was a sad situation because we don’t want to see this in a football club but unfortunately sometimes clubs have to take strong decisions because we don’t respond to the expectation.
“We have a lot of respect for Nuno but now we are focused on our new days, on our new ideas of football and we want energy from everyone at the club.”
No running
It is a little sad, as the Spurs captain mentioned.
Nuno was clearly out of his depth but it must be noted that the Harry Kane transfer saga did him no favours at all.
Joining a club that your best player wants to leave is far from ideal but, even without the Kane situation, results just weren’t good enough.
Under Nuno, Tottenham were horrendous across a number of different metrics – including distance covered, in which they were last in the Premier League.
If the players aren’t running for the manager then they haven’t totally bought into his ideas.
But hard work is a prerequisite under someone like Conte and it’ll be fascinating to see who raises their game over the weeks and months.
