Jose Enrique is excited by the prospect that Liverpool could secure the transfer of Teun Koopmeiners in January by claiming that ‘we didn’t expect Cody Gakpo’, as he posted on Instagram.

The former Liverpool left-back was reacting to Fabrizio Romano claiming on CaughtOffside that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have ‘scouted’ the Atalanta midfielder, who is Gakpo’s international teammate for the Netherlands.

Whilst the Anfield faithful were delighted with the Gakpo capture, in truth, it’s not what they needed because the midfield is their biggest issue.

The Reds can’t go crazy in the market this month to sort out that issue because it’s a long-term problem that will also require the summer to sort out.

But, with the winter window open, at least one midfield face needs to be brought in, or else, fans will start to worry that they might not secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, when Enrique heard about the rumours regarding Koopmeiners, he issued the following response regarding the 24-year-old.

“You never know,” said Enrique. “This is football and we didn’t expect Gakpo to happen and it came from nowhere.

“But I agree, we need a midfielder. Yes or yes and the club knows that as well so let’s see.”

LIVERPOOL’S ISSUES WORSENING

When domestic football halted and took a break for the 2022 World Cup, not many would have been more relieved than Liverpool.

They just needed that mental rest and time to gather themselves. Well, since returning, things are getting worse.

If they can get those fresh legs in, then it will lift players like Fabinho, who have been well of it, as well as take the pressure off players like Thiago when he isn’t with the ball and allow him to cook with it.
