‘We can’t be arrogant’: Conte dismisses Tottenham’s hopes of outrageous goal

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has dismissed the club’s chances of winning the Premier League title following a productive summer from the north London side.

Speaking to Sky Italia ahead of the new season this week, the Italian coach brought Tottenham’s expectations down to the ground after waving off ideas that Spurs could challenge for the Premier League title, with Conte noting that there is still a lot of work to do before the club can imagine doing something that remarkable.

Tottenham have only ever won two top-flight titles in their entire existence with their last triumph coming all the way back in 1961, with Spurs’ last piece of major silverware coming 14 years ago in the form of the League Cup, and it is this trophy drought that fans are expecting Conte to break this season.

With Manchester City the strong favourites to win the Premier League for a sixth time, Tottenham manager Conte is seemingly aware that Spurs stand no chance at challenging for the title this season, with Liverpool also expected to be strong again as well as London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

Indeed, the Premier League title is an incredibly lofty goal for any side, especially Tottenham, and Conte seemed to know that there won’t be any Leicester City-like miracle this season when it comes to a completely unexpected winner of England’s biggest prize in football.

The Italian manager said when asked about winning the Premier League: “We can’t be arrogant or presumptuous: we have started a serious path of work and thoughtful choices, but the club needs to take other steps before thinking of being a title contender right from the start.”

Tottenham winning the Premier League title is impossible, but silverware is very likely

Tottenham winning the title is of course something that will not happen this season, yet that doesn’t mean the north London side are due another campaign of nothing, with Conte arguably having the best shot yet out of any Spurs manager in recent years to win some actual silverware.

After all, Tottenham’s squad has never looked better, with Spurs having quality depth in almost every position, and with the FA Cup and League Cup up for grabs, there’s a strong chance that Tottenham could win one of the two domestic trophies this season and end their 14-year barren run of no success.
