Newcastle United are hoping to have Unai Emery in place before the weekend, according to Keith Downie live on Sky Sports News.

Emery to Newcastle?

Newcastle are now pushing to make Emery their manager, following the departure of Steve Bruce.

The Magpies’ owners have stalled over their decision, as they didn’t want to rush a managerial appointment.

However, after Newcastle’s defeat to Chelsea – which left them six points adrift of safety – there has been a realisation that an appointment is needed.

Emery apparently feels that he now has ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League, having been sacked by Arsenal during his only previous stint in England.

And Newcastle are now hoping to have the Spaniard in place very soon.

Progress made

“The favourite here to takeover at Newcastle is Unai Emery, the current manager of Villarreal,” he said, live from outside St. James’ Park.

“Things have moved on significantly since the weekend. That 3-0 defeat to Chelsea has made the owners of the club realise they need to get someone in soon.

“I think they want to ensure they have a manger in this week ahead of the trip to Brighton on Saturday.

“That will then give him a couple of weeks to work with the players during the international and Emery is the man, we can tell you, that the club are lining up to takeover from the sacked Steve Bruce.

“Emery is currently under contract at Villarreal and it will take £5 million to get him out of his contract there.

“While Emery publicly said he had heard nothing from Newcastle yesterday, privately there is a feeling that the Spaniard has unfinished business in the Premier League.”

If Emery does join Newcastle he will be under pressure to make a fast start.

The Magpies are still searching for their first win of the Premier League season, which has plunged them into relegation trouble.

Newcastle have continued to falter even after Bruce’s sacking, and Emery will have to set up his side quickly and effectively if he is to take them away from the danger zone.
