Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has said that he is optimistic over reported Tottenham target Milan Skriniar signing a new contract with the Serie A giants.

Speaking to the press via Sempre Inter, the Italian executive delivered an update on the Slovakian international’s contract situation, with Skriniar’s deal set to expire at the end of this season as interest from the likes of Tottenham intensifies for the defender.

CalcioMercatoWeb recently reported that Spurs were interested in signing Skriniar, with the defender winning the Scudetto under Antonio Conte during their time together in the 2020/21 Serie A season. And the centre-back currently looks set to leave the San Siro.

However, Marotta’s update could come as a blow to Tottenham, with the Inter CEO saying: “We are negotiating with Skriniar, he deserves to be part of our present and future. I am always optimistic in life. We can do a lot, but we cannot do the impossible. We hope to reach a conclusion soon.”

Skriniar started in Inter’s 1-0 win against Napoli last night as the Nerazzurri ended the Serie A leader’s unbeaten run in the league in stylish fashion. And results like this will be key in tying the defender down to the San Siro club in the coming weeks, with Tottenham seemingly in a losing battle.

Indeed, many Spurs fans would agree that a world-class centre-back would be a very welcome addition for Conte and his squad this January. And Skriniar could have been perfect if the north London side were proactive enough to take advantage of the defender’s contract situation at Inter.

Skriniar’s future has been one of the longest and most drawn-out sagas in European football over the last 12 months, with the defender now seemingly set to remain at Inter despite strong interest from some of the continent’s biggest clubs.

Tottenham will rightly feel mad about themselves for failing to strike fast enough for Skriniar, who now stands on the edge of signing a new contract with Inter despite dozens of reports and claims that the defender will leave the San Siro in 2023, much to the dismay of Spurs.
