Gabby Agbonlahor has stated on Twitter that Aston Villa are ‘massive’ amid rumours that they are about to appoint Mateu Alemany as their new director of football.
The 60-year-old holds that role for Spanish giants Barcelona – after taking up the gig in 2021 – but he is now set to leave the club on June 30 and join Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
Mateu Alemany has helped change the fortunes of Barcelona in the transfer market after helping pick up the mess from Josep Bartomeu’s ill-fated reign – they are set to win the La Liga title under midfield great, Xavi Hernandez.

But those in the Midlands, under the guidance of European expert, Unai Emery, have ambitions of their own.
And after David Ornstein reported in the Athletic that Villa are finalising a deal for Alemany, these were just the three words Agbonlahor posted regarding Villa possibly bringing in the highly-rated Spaniard.
‘We are massive’, the former striker wrote.
VILLA IN THE TRANSFER MARKET
Alex Moreno was one of two players Villa brought in during the January transfer window and it’s perhaps an indication of where they will go during the next transfer window – rising Spanish teenager, Ivan Fresneda, has been mentioned as a possible target.
The Spanish left-back has been outstanding since moving from Real Betis and it could be argued that he has been Villa’s best player during that period.
From La Liga players, to former players of Emery, and upcoming Spanish stars, a bit of a Spanish theme might hit the Midlands club during these coming years.
