‘We all know that’: Tim Sherwood’s comments on Leeds bite him back after Cooper’s red card

Tim Sherwood told Premier League Productions on Optus Sport (10/04/21 at 1:30 pm) that Liam Cooper’s red card challenge during Leeds United’s 2-1 win at Manchester City was born out of pure ‘excitement’ because they had just scored.

Whilst the outspoken TV pundit thinks Cooper deserved his red, it’s his comments at half-time about Leeds, which have now come back to bite him back.

With Leeds leading 1-0 at half-time, but being down to ten men and without their star man Patrick Bamford up top, Sherwood claimed ‘we all know that’ Manchester City are going to win this game now.

Well, a certain Stuart Dallas ensured the Englishman had egg on his face at the full-time whistle because this resilient Leeds team showed a different side to their game and secured all three points despite being at a disadvantage.

On Cooper’s red card: “If they haven’t scored a goal then he doesn’t make that challenge,” said Sherwood. “It’s almost like an excitement.

“When your team score, the euphoria of it. He is over-excited. He needs to calm his mind down. He doesn’t do that. He lets his side down. I think that’s excessive force.

“There was enough contact, but I was just thinking, after he has made contact, the ball is bouncing high, so where can he go? He’s cannot go anywhere. I am not trying to protect him because I think it’s a red card and it’s excessive force.

“I am sure when you speak to Bielsa, he’s not going to mention it. But I am sure if it was another manager, he will look at this and think ‘that has probably cost us the game’ because Man City go on to win this game now. We all know that.”

That’s four points for Leeds this season against the soon-to-be Premier League champions, which is some going for the newly-promoted side.

Leeds could be heading for a top ten finish this term, and after years and years of suffering in England’s second-tier, those in Yorkshire are now back and showing all their might against the elite.

The next showdown for Leeds is another heavyweight clash. This time it’s the current champions, Liverpool, who have to plan for the visit of Real Madrid before they try and tackle Bielsa’s men.
