‘We actually saw it’: Bamford shares his view of Leeds controversy against West Ham

Speaking on the Official Leeds United Podcast, Patrick Bamford has shared his view on Helder Costa’s disallowed goal against West Ham.

Costa’s strike against the Hammers was ruled out for what is probably the most marginal offside call you’re likely to see all season, and while Bamford was happy to admit he got the touch on the ball to play his teammate offside, he wasn’t too happy with the decision.

“Yeah, I did touch it yeah,” Bamford said.

“I had to touch it because otherwise Cresswell will head it. I actually thought when I touched it that Costa was miles offside, so running back I thought ‘ah I’ve ruined it by touching it even though I’ve had to’. Until we got to the changing room and we actually saw it. It was worse than the one at Wolves about my knee saying it was offside, it was 10 times worse than that, and I don’t know how they gave it.”

Costa was offside by a fraction, so the right decision was made in the end, but the actual debate as to whether or not he gained an advantage is one that may never be settled.

VAR has made these sort of decisions so robotic, and goals that would likely have been given, are now being chalked off because of a matter of centimetres, and that’s not really what anyone wants to see.

It’s interesting that Bamford thought Costa was miles offside initially, but on repeat viewing, it’s clear to see just how close of a call it actually was.
