Town were fourth in League One at the time and had lost just three of their previous 55 regular season fixtures, prompting Rooney, the former England captain, to post the following tweet:
However, the decision to axe Clark would soon be justified, as the Terriers, then under the guidance of Simon Grayson, gained promotion anyway via the play-offs.
Clark would also bounce back, taking charge of Birmingham City – who were already a Championship outfit – just weeks after Huddersfield’s success.
But as Town established themselves as second tier mainstays, and eventually gained promotion to the Premier League under David Wagner earlier this year, Clark’s career in management seems to have peaked at Birmingham.
The Geordie left St Andrew’s in October 2014 and quickly took charge of Blackpool, whose slide into League One that season culminated in another sacking for Clark.
A spell at Kilmarnock followed, but Clark resigned from that post after only a year. And the p45 was dispatched again on Tuesday, after Clark took Bury to just a point off the bottom of League One.
Huddersfield, it would appear, were onto something all along.
