Wayne Rooney has spoken about a key influence on the early development of Kai Rooney, as his son begins to make his way through the Manchester United academy.

Kai, just 16, is already trying to live up to expectations at Old Trafford, shaped largely by his father’s extraordinary career with the club.

Born in Liverpool, Kai has appeared twice for Manchester United’s Under-18 side and found the net once so far.

Wayne Rooney is regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers and holds the title of all-time leading scorer for Manchester United. While Kai is still very young, he’s already shown promise within a youth setup that’s produced plenty of top talent over the years.

Reflecting on his own emergence, Rooney recalled that his early fame was largely confined to local attention, first in Liverpool and later nationally after his move to Manchester United in 2004.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show via BBC Sport, he explained that social media is the clearest contrast between his era and his son’s. Rooney noted that while he was known through newspapers and word of mouth, young players today are exposed to global audiences almost instantly.

He pointed out that Kai is already visible to vast numbers of people online, plays for Manchester United, and has a sponsorship deal in place — levels of exposure Rooney himself did not face as a teenager. That constant visibility, he suggested, brings added pressure that did not exist during his own youth career.

Rooney also underlined the responsibility he feels to protect his son from the negative side of that attention. He stressed that young players are judged quickly, particularly when they begin to approach senior football, and that those judgments are not always fair.

According to Rooney, maintaining a stable support system is essential. He emphasised the importance of family, trusted people at the club and close advisors helping young players stay grounded and mentally balanced.

While acknowledging how easy it is to be swept up by online narratives, Rooney made it clear that acting in the best interests of the player is non-negotiable. Ensuring that Kai remains in a positive environment, he said, is the single most important priority.

Rooney’s own Manchester United career came to an end in 2017, following a trophy-laden spell that included five Premier League titles, a Champions League and multiple domestic cups. Now, as his son takes early steps within the same club, Rooney’s focus has shifted firmly from personal success to long-term protection and perspective.
