Wayne Rooney has been quoted by MLS Soccer’s official website as saying that Miguel Almiron was the club’s best player during the Toon’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Almiron, 24, has already broken into Newcastle’s starting eleven after joining the club for a club-record deal from MLS side Atlanta United on deadline day in the January transfer window. A fee is believed to be around £21million.

Now with three appearances and two starts under his belt, Newcastle fans are beginning to realise why their club opted to splash out on the Paraguay international – and why Rafa Benitez has been after him for a while.

Speaking about Almiron’s move to the Premier League, former England captain Rooney spoke about how the playmaker’s transfer can be a model for the MLS and stated he was impressed by his start at St. James’ Park.

“I don’t know if any of [you] watched the Newcastle game the other day [2-0 win over Huddersfield]. Almiron went in and he was the best player on the pitch by a mile,” Rooney said.

“I think that’s great for this league to have players going over, to England, to Spain wherever they go and to perform. [It] will give fans around the world and in Europe maybe a different opinion on MLS.”

Almiron continued his strong start to life on Tyneside with a strong performance in a 2-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday night, with goals coming from Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff.

Rooney and current side DC United begin their 2019 MLS campaign on Sunday, taking on Almiron’s former side Atlanta while Almiron is next in action as the Toon travel to the capital to take on West Ham United this weekend.
