Wayne Rooney has predicted Lionel Messi to take MLS seriously ahead of Inter Miami’s official unveiling of the Argentine superstar.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the DC United head coach tipped the 35-year-old forward to treat his time in America not as a vacation, with Messi set to be announced as a new Inter Miami player this Sunday in Florida alongside former FC Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba

Rooney said: “You’re getting arguably the best player to ever play the game. I’m sure he will come here and want to be competitive and want to try and help Miami climb up the table. So, I think not just fans, but coaches, players, everyone is excited to have him in the league.”

Messi joins MLS as the league’s highest-ever paid player and arguably the biggest profile athlete now plying their trade in America. And there’s a growing sense of optimism that the soccer legend will help lead a new surge in popularity for the sport.

However, this could only happen if Messi takes MLS and Inter Miami seriously. Though given how professional the forward has been throughout his career, there’s a strong chance that the Argentine forward will want to push his new club to heights never seen at the franchise.

Rooney is fully aware of the weight that currently rests on Messi’s shoulders as the attacker prepares to move to MLS, with the former England and Manchester United captain once viewed as a player who can take soccer in America to a whole new level.

Indeed, whilst Rooney and Messi are on two different spectrums of the sport, the DC United manager is a good man to trust when it comes to these sort of topics, and the former England striker knows that his former rival will want to impress in America with Inter Miami.
