Wayne Rooney is returning to D.C. United and he could now bring former Liverpool reserve captain Victor Palsson to Major League Soccer.

Rooney spent two years playing for D.C. United in Major League Soccer before finishing up his playing career with Derby County.

Rooney did a superb job in very difficult circumstances with Derby but recently decided to leave the club in search of a new challenge.

The former Manchester United hero hasn’t had to wait long for that new opportunity, as he has agreed to return to D.C. United as their new manager.

This is seen as a major coup for D.C. United given that Rooney was carving out such a strong reputation for himself as a coach in English football.

We would imagine that Rooney will be back managing in England once again some day soon but for now, Major League Soccer is his new challenge.

It’s early to think about signings; Rooney hasn’t even been confirmed as D.C. United’s new manager just yet.

Yet over in Germany, Sky are claiming that Rooney may already have a first signing in mind for his new job.

They suggest that D.C. United are lining up a deal to bring in Schalke defender Victor Palsson alongside Rooney.

It’s claimed that Palsson will be given a ‘lucrative and long-term’ contract to join D.C. United given that he would actually prefer to stay at Schalke.

The Iceland international may be a familiar name to some given that he used to be on the Liverpool books.

Palsson joined Liverpool from AGF in Denmark back in 2009 and served as reserve team captain during his time at Anfield.

Palsson failed to really make the breakthrough at Liverpool though and ended up leaving in 2011, just two years after joining.

Liverpool clearly saw some potential in Palsson but his career has taken him to Scotland, America, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and now Germany.

Palsson has MLS experience with New York Red Bulls and Rooney may now make the former Liverpool talent his first signing at D.C. United in an intriguing move.
